Can dogs eat chocolate?

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine (methylxanthines). Dogs break theobromine down very slowly — about 17.5 hours versus 2–3 hours in people — so it accumulates to dangerous levels. Dark, baking and cocoa-powder chocolate are far more dangerous than milk chocolate.
How much matters
Mild signs can begin around 20 mg/kg of theobromine, heart-rhythm effects at 40–50 mg/kg, and seizures at 60 mg/kg — as little as a few grams of dark chocolate per kilo of body weight.
