Avocado contains a compound called persin that is a serious problem for birds and rabbits, but dogs are far more resistant. The bigger day-to-day risks for a dog are the large pit (a choking and intestinal-blockage hazard) and the high fat content, which can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis.
If you do share it
Offer only a small piece of plain ripe flesh occasionally — never the pit, skin, or guacamole (which often contains onion, garlic and salt).
Signs of trouble to watch for
- Vomiting or diarrhoea (if too much fat)
- Choking or blockage (from the pit)
